The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.
But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
