The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major honors show approaches, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
