Los Angeles Battles Record-Breaking High Temperatures Only Days Following Major Winter Weather.
After enduring heavy downpours that resulted in floodwaters across parts of the city, Los Angeles is now confronting abnormally hot temperatures for the end of February.
Record-Shattering Readings
On Friday midday, the temperature reached 91°F (33°C) in downtown Los Angeles, per data from weather officials. This breaks the previous daily record for this date, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was established in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were labeled on NWS graphics for the region.
Public Health Advisories
The weather service cautioned that Friday's heat posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their guidance featured:
- Staying hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Never leaving anyone unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Sharp Reversal
This sharp rise in temperature comes on the heels of a massive winter storm that battered the state recently. That system delivered heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to mountainous regions, leading to mudslide risks for many residents.
Sadly, the conditions also triggered a deadly avalanche in the Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Weekend Outlook
Forecasters predict cooler conditions will arrive. Readings were predicted to decrease to around 61°F (16°C) in the city by late Friday.
Other locales that reached the 90-degree mark featured Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Additionally, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were projected to see the high 80s.
In the coming days, downtown Los Angeles can expect temperatures in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures on tap for the following week.
