Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Gunbattle at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.
The criminal group invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.
The attackers "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before breaching the school's outer barrier and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, an official report indicated.
One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to create fear.
Area inhabitants told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into nearby bushland.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and suspected escape routes.
In the past few years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have become frequent targets for militant organizations, who frequently execute kidnappings to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.
The incident in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.
Protection challenge in northern Nigeria has worsened considerably in recent months, with schools bearing the brunt of the violence.
